Description

These Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets are crispy on the outside, tender inside, and much better than store-bought frozen versions. They are simple to make with basic pantry items, excellent for kids, and suitable for freezing.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) boneless, skinless chicken breast (cut into 1-inch pieces)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp milk (optional)
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup regular breadcrumbs (optional)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Cooking spray (olive oil/avocado oil spray)


Instructions

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3 minutes.
  2. Cut the chicken into uniform, bite-size nuggets and pat them completely dry with paper towels.
  3. Prepare three shallow bowls for the breading station.
  4. Place the flour in Bowl 1.
  5. Whisk the eggs and milk (if using) together in Bowl 2.
  6. Combine the panko breadcrumbs, regular breadcrumbs (if using), garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, salt, and pepper in Bowl 3.
  7. Coat each chicken piece first in the flour (Bowl 1), shaking off excess.
  8. Dip the floured piece into the egg wash (Bowl 2).
  9. Finally, press the piece firmly into the breadcrumb mixture (Bowl 3) to make the coating stick well.
  10. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
  11. Arrange the coated nuggets in a single layer in the basket. You must cook in batches to avoid crowding.
  12. Spray the tops of the nuggets lightly with oil spray.
  13. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 10 to 12 minutes. Flip the nuggets halfway through the cooking time.
  14. Remove when they are golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).

Notes

  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; this prevents the nuggets from getting truly crispy.
  • For an extra crunchy coating, consider a double breading: flour → egg → crumbs → egg → crumbs.
  • If you substitute chicken thighs for breasts, extend the cooking time by 1 to 2 minutes.
  • You can make a faster version by using only panko breadcrumbs and omitting the regular breadcrumbs.
  • Serve with dipping sauces like honey mustard, BBQ sauce, or spicy mayo.
